Experienced Waste Management Engineer / Consultant

Leigh Design is a specialist consultancy delivering clear, efficient and compliance-focused waste management advice and the preparation of Waste Management Plans for urban developments across Australia.  With over 17 years of experience, we work closely with Councils, developers, architects, town planners, builders and project managers in guiding high-performing sustainable waste management outcomes across a wide range of building types.

We’re entering an exciting new chapter – one that places greater focus on circular thinking, innovation, and environmental leadership. As part of this evolution, we’re looking for a person with experience in waste management who is future-focused and committed to creating better urban outcomes.

THE ROLE

Key tasks and responsibilities:

  • Prepare Waste Management Plans for a range of projects: residential, commercial, mixed-use, and more
  • Apply planning policies and council requirements to practical, development-ready strategies
  • Liaise directly with clients to gather information, provide advice, and support project delivery
  • Estimate waste volumes and recommend appropriate infrastructure and collection systems
  • Assess spatial and access layouts for functionality and compliance
  • Respond to Council and referral authority feedback]
  • Stay across evolving policies, best practices and industry trends.

You’re well suited to the role if you:

  • Have 2+ years’ experience in waste consulting and planning, or a related field
  • Share our commitment to environmental performance, circularity and best-practice outcomes
  • Strive to meet the highest design standards while meeting Council expectations
  • Have strong written communication skills with the ability to prepare clear, compliant documentation
  • Are confident interpreting architectural drawings and working with architects and designers
  • Are familiar with relevant planning frameworks and waste policy across Australian jurisdictions
  • Are adaptable, self-motivated, detail-oriented and capable of working both independently and collaboratively
  • Value the environment and want to contribute to positive change – just as the rest of our team does!

Desirable Qualifications:

A tertiary qualification or equivalent in one of the following (or related fields) is desirable but not mandatory:

  • Environmental Science
  • Urban or Environmental Planning
  • Sustainability or Resource Management
  • Architecture or Design
  • Environmental Engineering

Flexibility and support:

Hybrid working is on offer for this role, allowing for a combination of in-office and remote working.
We work to a flexible effective 80-hour working fortnight, meaning you have flexibility around working 9 or 10 days per fortnight. This flexibility extends to the hours you work each day, as well as your start and finish times – all to support you in more harmoniously blending work with other areas of your life.

Our bright, open-plan Melbourne office located in the heart of Camberwell is close to public transport, central to a vast array of amenities, and has on-site parking and end-of-trip facilities also available.
